Educational development has complimented my teaching, service and scholarship throughout my entire career. The use of the Teaching and Learning project as an educational development tool has grown out of my interest and involvement in that field.
I am working closely with a colleague from the Caltech Center for Teaching, Learning & Outreach, as well as colleagues from other teaching and learning centers, on the application of the Teaching and Learning project in various contexts. One of the most interesting uses of the project images has been as catalyst for meaningful discussions with faculty about teaching and learning. Once I’ve made photographs of faculty members, my colleague and I have conversations with them about their images. These discussions mainly cover the faculty member’s interpretation of the photographs and reflection on their teaching practice. The discussions vary in formality and almost always lead to some pretty amazing revelations.
